This weekend Barack Obama rallied in Oregon where 52 delegates are up for grabs. The outcome is insignificant here but it was a chance to include some sound bites on environmental issues. Talking environment in Oregon is like preaching to the choir. The people of the Pacific Northwest are some of the most environmentally active and educated people in the US.
Speaking to his overheated supporters, sweltering in uncommon 90 + degrees, he added the following bite:
“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times…”
Obama used his air-conditioned SUV caravan to travel to other Oregon venues.
He also went on the attack at what he called phony strategies. His attack on John McCain pointed out McCain’s gas holidays and increased drilling. Obama offered very little, as to what he would do other than the hackneyed “take big oil’s excessive profits”.
Obama was actually smart not to offer any real substance, because Oregonians would have chopped up his plans like Salmon Pate. On any given Sunday, most people from the Pacific Northwest are busy enjoying hiking, water sports, running, or helping to clean our beaches of trash left by visitors and shipping.
The only reason Obama traveled the beautiful state of Oregon, was to muster up local supporters and show the rest of the America that he is accepted in an area that most consider environmentally astute.
